Hostas are extremely popular, hardy herbaceous perennial plants with outstanding foliage and flowers. Their leaves come in a range of colors including many
shades of green, blue-gray, gold, yellow, and white. Leaf shapes vary from long and lance-like, to oblong, to heart-shaped. Hosta leaves can be smooth, puckered,
ribbed, or leathery in texture. All hostas bloom in summer with spikes of lavender-to-white, lily-like flowers.
Hostas can fill a very important niche in your landscape as groundcover or foundation plants. They also make great container plants which can be placed
anywhere you have good, filtered light. Try them at the front steps, on the patio, or set into a garden bed to fill a gap. Although hostas are considered shade-tolerant plants,
most grow best in an exposure with morning sun and afternoon shade.
